The Big Red — known locally as Al Hamar — is one of the most photographed dunes in the UAE and one of the few locations close enough to Dubai to do as a day trip without an early-morning start. The dune itself reaches around 100 metres and provides a genuinely different riding experience from the more commonly visited desert conservation areas further south.

Why we still bring guests to Hatta for a buggy day
Most of our tours run out of Lahbab, but Hatta and Big Red come up often enough in guest questions that it is worth being straight about it: Big Red is a genuinely good dune for a first ride, mainly because of its size. At around 100 metres, it gives you a real climb and a real descent without the multi-hour drive some of the deeper desert areas require, which is why it is popular with day-trippers who only have an afternoon free.
The trade-off is that Big Red is also one of the most visited dune sites in the UAE, so expect other operators and their convoys nearby, especially on weekends and around sunset. Getting ready before you go
Whichever location you ride at, the basics do not change. Check the vehicle before you set off — tyres, harness, that the guide has actually walked you through the controls rather than just handed you the keys. Wear closed shoes and clothing you do not mind getting dusty, and bring more water than you think you need; the desert dries you out faster than the heat alone suggests.
